log Cabin Revisited - Steppin' Out

Outside the Lines
With Jean Wells & Tonye Phillips
Sunday, September 20, 10:30 - 4:30 pm
& Monday, September 21, 9 - 3 pm
Intermediate BSS
$45

The quilts from Gee’s Bend fascinate Tonye and Jean. In this workshop, they will present some basic shapes that are used in quilt design. Students will play with design concepts, then choose one or more to pursue in the workshop. An example is the “house top” design where you begin with a square and keep adding borders, interrupting them at times with fabrics pieced into the strips. A medallion design is created using this technique. Piecing will be very intuitive as will color choices.

quilt design exploration class with jean wells

Quilt Design Exploration
At the Stitchin' Post
Sunday, October 25, 2009 from 10:30 to 4:30
& Monday, October 26, from 9 to 3**

Discover new cutting and piecing methods to get you “out of the box, beyond the block”. We are offering two different opportunities for you to work with Jean and explore color and quilt design in terms of line and shape. The first option is a condensed, two day class in October. (The second option is a more “on-going” study once a month for five months, starting in January.) In these hands-on classes, Jean will provide the fabric for the first meeting, and then you will work on our own project using your own fabrics.

*This class is based on Jean’s new book, Intuitive Color and Design. More of Jean’s work can be viewed by going to her website at www.jeanwellsquilts.com.

**Book purchase required: Intuitive Color and Design by Jean Wells ($27.95 less 15% class discount).

Off the Wall Quilts
Jean Wells
Monday, December 7, 10:30 - 3 pm
Advanced Beginning BSS*
$30

These are literally “off the wall” small quilt designs that Jean created by covering painter’s canvases. The top and sides are pieced. Fabric is sewn to the back. These little pieces of art can be placed on a shelf or table, or hung on the wall. Jean uses her small “intuitive quilt designs”, but you could bring a pieced or appliquéd block for the top and we will work on the sides and assemble the piece in class.

*Bring a small canvas that has been stretched over a frame.
See the Supply List for more details.

intuitive color and design book

Intuitive Color & Design Workshop
At the Stitchin' Post
Monday, April 26 – Friday, April 30, 2010
(this session is currently full)
$250**
(includes lunches)

Second Date Added!
Monday, May 3 – Friday, May 7, 2010

Do you want to explore quilt design in a more intuitive way, explore new ways of working? In this class, we will do some cutting without rulers, which creates gentle curves and some nice design lines. There are several ways you can go in the workshop: You can work on one design and create a small wall hanging or pillow, create four similar images and put them into a four-patch setting for a wall quilt, or design a larger quilt that does not use the repeated block format. Jean is enjoying using mostly solids with the interjection of tow or three printed fabrics, or all solids. By eliminating some of the prints, you learn to focus on color relationships and value.*

Explore quilt design and quilt presentation in a more intuitive way. The first two days of the workshop will be spent exploring techniques, and color and design challenges. Many creative options will be presented for the students to think about in the design and construction of their own project. Jean's new book, Intuitive Design and Color: Adventures in Art Quilting, shows examples of quilts using these techniques. This journal style approach to interpreting ideas is great for students wanting to "step out of the box" and pursue their own ideas for quilts. Facings and portrait style finishing techniques will be presented as well as "Off the Wall Quilts."

intuitive landscape design

Abstract Landscape Design
Jean Wells Keenan

Let the flowing forms in nature be your inspiration in this design exploration workshop. Land, water, sky, rocks; details in leaves and wood can all be starting off points for this process. Line is the focal point of design in this workshop. Several exercises are planned to build your confidence in piecing, color, value, and design skills. Then the emphasis will be on the planning and execution of an original design focusing on a color palette that excites you using inspirational photos that you have brought along. In the end you will have documented your journey in a journal like format and created a one of a kind quilt.

intuitive quilting by jean wells

Intuitive Color & Design

Have you been intrigued by and admired the spontaneous quilt designs of the Gee’s Bend quilts? Jean will take you through some design and technique exercises and you will learn to design intuitively. You choose to put your rulers aside and cut freely, in which case gentle curves are created in the design. You can make a wall hanging, several pillows, or a bed size quilt.

off the wall quilts

Off the Wall Quilts

These are literally “off the wall” as I cover a painter’s canvas that I purchase at Michael’s or an art supply store with a small quilt design. The top of the box like structure is not only pieced but the sides are too. Then fabric is sewn to the back. They can be placed on a shelf or table or hung on a wall. I have been using my small “intuitive quilt designs” but you could use pieced or appliqué blocks as well. You can come to class with a pieced or appliquéd top and work on the sides and assemble the piece or start from scratch with the piecing.

portraits from the garden quilt class

Portraits from the Garden

Simple machine appliqué techniques will be explored in this small wall hanging that Jean has designed with garden motifs. She will share leaf and flower shapes that you may use, or bring in shapes of your own. The small appliqués are stitched as individual quilts then sewn to a quilted surface to add a dimensional look. Free motion quilting is used in the background. Jean’s book, Portraits from Nature, is required for class.
